Today's online multiplayer PC gaming industry exists because of now-defunct companies? Companies like GameSpy, Mplayer, and Heat.net? Do they ring a bell? In the late 1990s, the Internet was accessible via by Dial-Up connections. Playing online multiplayer games could sometimes be frustrating. It was not until software companies GameSpy and Mplayer introduced a new service. A service that made it easier for players to connect with each other and in games. At the time, it was in the online mode of the famous first-person shooter game, Quake. SegaSoft released Heat.net and organized the HeatCIGL. They made online multiplayer computer games, and e-sports in general a thing. It involved colleges from all over and had a $5000 prize pool. In 1998, Sierra Internet Gaming System released World Opponent Network. It offered online multi-player services for games like Valve's Counter-Strike and Blizzard's StarCraft.

Playing online multiplayer games is much easier with the invention of Broadband connections. It also paved the way to the rise of easy-to-access digital distributors like Steam, GOG, and Origin. With those distributors, playing the best online games became easy. Top multiplayer games like DotA 2, Player Unknown's Battlegrounds, and Fortnite became accessible. The last two, in particular, helped with the popularity of the battle royale genre. The rise of Steam and Origin led to the downfall of the pioneers of online multiplayer gaming though. Heat.net closed down in 2000 followed shortly by Mplayer in 2001. Game-reviewer website IGN bought GameSpy two years earlier in 2013.

Fifteen years ago we embarked on a journey. Frustrated with the state of information about cooperative games in the renaissance of online gaming, we set out to catalog all of the important bits of information about non-competitive multiplayer. On January 28th, 2008 Co-Optimus was born.

When Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection launched earlier this year, 6 out of the 13 included games featured online multiplayer. That number has now increased by one thanks to this week's huge update. The update adds 2-player online co-op to the Super Nintendo version of TMNT: Turtles in Time as well as numerous new options and enhancements to other parts of the collection. It's going to be a cowabunga-cool Christmas for Turtles fans!

Therefore a suggestion was made to base the PC update on a variation of NTT source code instead, ditching online multiplayer functionality(which takes a toll on performance due to technical specifics),but maintaining bug fixes and numerous "quality of life" improvements.

While my offer of collaboration to bring online multiplayer to Nuclear Throne was metwith generally reasonable scepticism, the story didn't end there -half of year later my periodic investigations of GameMaker's file formats and inner workingshad reached the point where it would seem like it might be possible to produce binary patches to mod select GM games.

The result, however, is impressing - I was able to implement fairly solid online multiplayerin a game without even having source code access. While looking over the raw game logic, I was also able to narrow down and fix a multitude ofsmaller issues plaguing the game.

The game is a collaboration between me and Max Brovko (@insweater).Max wrote most of the game code while I've done the effects, most of the minimalistic graphics, and online multiplayer implementation.Ninja sprites were drawn by Seth Groom.GameJolt achievement icons were drawn by Airwolt.

In the end, the game has perfectly functional local and online multiplayer modes, a fair of variety, and some space for tactics. While it currently lacks a single-player mode (making a competent AI isn't easy), it can be fun for a while if you have someone to play with.

Super Bomberman R is a no-frills entry in a series which had been dormant for far too long. The Switch's unique focus on local multiplayer makes this a perfect fit. Support for Switch Pro Controller as well as single and dual Joy-Con play - along with local network and online multiplayer - make this the go-to multiplayer title for both old-school gamers and those who have never played a Bomberman before (really - just who are you inviting to these parties of yours?). Newbies will very quickly get into the frantic swing of things, so if you're looking to share the joy with your friends, Super Bomberman R is as dependably explosive fun as it's ever been.
